The Open golf major is entering the metaverse as part of a pact between The R&A and virtual reality (VR) game Golf 5.
The Open has stated the partnership ushers in ‘the world’s first major in the metaverse’ and wants the activation to help lure new audiences to golf. It also believes advancing tech such as VR and the metaverse gives the sport the opportunity to offer one-of-a-kind experiences.
“We have created The VR Open so that fans can engage with the Championship like never before using technology and the metaverse,” said Neil Armit, chief commercial officer at The R&A.
“This is an important development as we aim to attract new audiences to the sport and the advancement of technology enables us to offer ground-breaking experiences that are unique in golf. We look forward to seeing the reaction of fans as the first ever VR Open takes place this summer.”
The VR Open is launching in the metaverse on 15th July, ahead of the 151st Open Championship getting underway on 20th July at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
