Marvel’s newly released Secret Invasion show on Disney+ is sure to have a lot of twists and turns, but Nick Fury being a Skrull won’t be one of them. Marvel decided to debunk a long-held fan theory as soon as possible, as the show’s premiere saw Nick Fury lying in bed remembering his death in Avengers: Infinity War. So, fans can at least let that prediction go as they enjoy the MCU’s latest effort.

If you’re unfamiliar with the theory, many fans thought that Talos the Skrull (Ben Mendelsohn) replaced Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury after the latter died in Avengers: Infinity War. However, it seems that Fury definitely recovered post-snap and is fully back in action in Secret Invasion. Which is good because it seems like they’re going to need his strategic mind and spycraft skills.

Secret Invasion stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury as he uncovers an invasion of shapeshifting Skrulls who have infiltrated positions of power in society. Along with Jackson and Mendelsohn as the returning Talos, the series stars Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle. Kyle Bradstreet, best known for his work on Mr. Robot, is the showrunner, while Ali Selim directs.

To be fair to the Secret Invasion theorists, if Nick Fury was actually replaced by Talos, it wouldn’t be the first time it happened in the MCU. At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was revealed that Talos was standing in for Fury the entire time while Fury was up on his space station. This is probably why Marvel felt like it needed to clear this up before getting too deep into the show.

Secret Invasion is based on the comic run of the same name, where it was revealed that several familiar heroes were actually Skrulls in disguise. Since Nick Fury is one of the most prominent characters in the series, it’s a good idea to rule him out early. However, it remains to be seen if the Disney+ series can recreate the big twists that the comic run brought to the table.

While Secret Invasion says that Skrulls have infiltrated positions of power, it’s tough to imagine how they would have Skrull reveals that have the same impact as, say, Hank Pym and Black Bolt, who were both revealed to be Skrulls in the comics. There aren’t any indications that the heroes we’ve been introduced to in the MCU could be Skrulls, but maybe we’ll end up being surprised. Revealing Nick Fury as a Skrull would certainly live up to that level of surprise, but it seems like that isn’t the route Marvel is going with this.

For now, it looks like we’ll have to tune in to new episodes of Secret Invasion to see what twists and turns the Nick Fury-led show has in store. New episodes will be hitting Disney+ every Wednesday between now and July 26. You can check out the premiere on Disney+ now and start formulating your own theories.
