A popular fan theory has emerged from social media sites such as Reddit which links Loki to the events of Avengers: Endgame. The character, as expertly portrayed by Tom Hiddleston throughout many MCU inclusions, including an ongoing eponymous Disney+ series, famously met his demise in the opening moments of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War when he was brutally killed by Thanos himself.
However, many fans seem to think that Loki had an integral part in setting the events of Endgame into motion, shapeshifting into the rat which freed Scott Lang from the Quantum Tunnel.
Was Loki The Rat Who Freed Ant-Man From The Quantum Realm?
This could be used in the MCU canon either as a planned decision or a convenient retcon, but actually would make a lot of sense. For starters, Loki is shown to have escaped with the Tesseract in the latter half of Avengers: Endgame when the Avengers travel back in time to collect the infinity stones, thus creating a timeline variant which kicked off the character’s mischievous exploits within the Loki series.
Once Loki arrived at the TVA, he was able to look through a fundamental timeline of his life, showing that his former ally, Thanos, was set to kill him, wipe out the entire Asgardian race, and snap half of all life out of existence in the coming years.
The Rat Is The True Hero In Avengers: Endgame
Furthermore, many fans seem to find the conveniently curious rat to be a needless connivance in an otherwise perfect film, with many MCU fans joking on the web that the unnamed rat was the one true savior of the universe.
Could The Loki Series Explain The Events In Endgame?
However, if it does turn out to be Loki who freed Scott Lang from the Quantum realm in Avengers: Endgame, this would eliminate the contrivance from the plot, making the rat’s movement over the operating instruments in the van entirely purposeful. A few fans have even brainstormed creative ways for the God of mischief to arrive at this choice within the Loki series, before making a grand return in the future of the MCU.
Could Loki Reunite With His Brother?
As it currently stands, most Marvel mainstays have no idea where Loki has gone or whether or not he’s still alive. Thor seems to have moved past the mourning stage of grieving his deceased brother, traveling the stars with the Guardians of the Galaxy for a time following the events of Avengers: Endgame. If Loki completes his mission as the shapeshifting rat, he could make a triumphant return to the public in an upcoming Avengers outing leading a team of Minutemen alongside Owen Wilson’s Mobius.
Marvel’s Jonathan Majors Issue
This could be a smart direction for Marvel to take Loki, as the latest multi-story arc villain the franchise has produced following Avengers: Endgame has encountered a number of big issues. For starters, Jonathan Majors‘ Kang The Conqueror may soon be recast or written out of the franchise entirely, as the actor battles a high-profile legal case regarding alleged assault on his former girlfriend.
The studio has been tight-lipped since the news broke earlier this year, with many fans wondering exactly what Marvel plans to do to control the PR nightmare.
