Deadpool 3 reportedly shows one fan-favorite accurately for the first time after decades of this character avoiding their comic-accurate costume.
Only in recent years has Marvel been more open to the stranger side of the comics. It wasn’t so 20 years ago. X-Men was one of the first mainstream Marvel films, and it leaned heavily toward being more gritty and realistic. Renowned monstrous X-Men director Bryan Singer leaned into the mutant team’s outfits being streamlined in black leather. Lines of dialogue even mocked the comic’s yellow spandex uniforms.
But finally, decades later, fans may be rewarded with seeing the iconic costumes come to live action for one of the franchise’s most popular characters. In a post on Instagram, @canwegetsometoast posted a potential scoop that Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) may finally don his comic-accurate costume in Deadpool 3. One picture the user posted is a screenshot of Wolverine’s classic black and yellow mask.
This Deadpool 3 update is one in a string of speculation whirling around the upcoming film. Jackman surprised many when he announced he would return after his definitive swan song in Logan. Inspired by the Old Man Logan run of comics, the film ended emotionally with the titular character’s death. Nonetheless, Jackman decided to come back, and his return even got the blessing of Logan director James Mangold. Because Deadpool takes place before Logan, its legacy won’t be besmirched.
If there is any franchise that will do the clawed mutant justice, it will be Deadpool. Despite the false start of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Deadpool has stood the test of time. Though many viewers will never be able to unsee the unfortunate Deadpool representation in the origin film, the merc with the mouth returned as a much better version when Ryan Reynolds took on more creative control. This is the film series that celebrated the humor of the comics when other films wanted to do more serious fare. The first film asserted itself as classic Deadpool, almost immediately throwing the audience into meta humor and fourth-wall-breaking.
There were changes, of course, as there must sometimes be. Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s powers changed from the comics, and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) has not yet become the mutant, Copycat. But where it counts, Reynolds has done his best to incorporate canon. Deadpool 2 brought about the famous time-traveling character Cable (Josh Brolin) and assassin Domino (Zazie Beetz). Deadpool‘s simple vibe allows for more outrageous content, such as a new version of Wolverine. Plot details are still under wraps, but one thing is certain, Reynolds wouldn’t squander this golden opportunity of getting Wolverine right if he could help it.
Deadpool 3 will be released on May 3, 2024.
